We have a lousy coop, they do have respectable roosts in their attached run, but don’t use them when it’s cold.

Oh. Hmm. Chickens will roost as high as they can get. Wish there was some way you could install roosts and poop trays a little higher than your nests, or at least higher than the bottoms of the nests. With them roosting in the nests, don't you get poopy eggs?

I didn’t know better when we got the coop, wish I’d joined BYC sooner!

We don’t get poopy eggs because I clean the poop out of the coop every morning, rain or shine. My punishment for not researching chicken coops better.

I made a lot of mistakes in my coop before I found BYC too! My worst one was I had a great big window next to the roost on the WINDWARD side of the coop! It's a wonder my poor chickens even survived until I fixed that! And nearly as bad: that was practically the only source of "ventilation" in the coop, which means NO ventilation, as there was no cross-draft to get air moving - until this past summer when I hired a guy to cut windows on the opposite side, higher up. My coop was an oven before that! smh!
