How many in each?

I am getting 15 chicks late next week. I have three boxes to use for brooding them. Two are 3x5 and one is 2x4. I am getting 5 layers and 10 broilers. I was thinking of putting the layers in the 2x4 and 5 each of the broilers in the 3x5s. The layers would be going to a bigger area when they outgrow the box, but the broilers would stay in the boxes the whole time (with excursions to the outside every day). Does that sound reasonable or should I change things around?

If they are cardboard they can and will peck the box. I would really try to find different means than keeping them in boxes.

I've kept chicks in cardboard boxes before without issue (though they get soggy easily when the water spills), but this time they are actually wood boxes that my husband has constructed.
