Last year I started with 3 chickens. We've been through all 4 seasons and they are still doing well. Now I want to expand & add 7 more. I am building a new coop to hold 10 chickens, but am stuck on how many nesting boxes I need. Hopefully I will end up with 1 rooster and 9 pullets. Will 4 or 5 nesting boxes be enough ?

3 would probably be plenty. We built 2 for our 4 hens and left out the separator. Recently I found 2 in it at once and even though there was plenty of room to spread out the second hen seemed too be trying to lay her egg on the other hens back.

I currently have 4 boxes for 36 layers and will have 6 boxes for 56 layers when our new chicks start laying.

For 9 layers, 2 nest boxes will easily suffice.

oh yes, thats plenty of nesting boxes. I have 40 chickens and 12 boxes. Half the boxes go unused. So no worries, you should be fine!

I should have checked this site before I built my new coop. I turned one of my horses stalls into a 8x10 coop and they have an 8x10 outside run. I put 10 nesting boxes in for only 6 hens. Guess I went a little overboard. Oops lol
