How much are you paying for feed?

We're up to $15 for 50# of Layena. I've heard that the Daniel Jackson feed mill in Ranburne, AL is significantly cheaper, like $9/50#. It's a good 40 miles from me, but gas prices have decreased and feed prices have increased, so it looks like I'm getting a little windshield time.

I see most of you get "50 pounds" per bag.

Here in the wonderful world of metric..grrrr..we get "44lbs" in a bag. Bags are 20 kilograms. I pay depending on the feed store $11 to $13.50 for laying pellets. Organic vegetable laying pellets run $20. Add 12% tax on top of those prices as well!

The big problem with the metric system is that most suppliers of almost any packaged item, be it in kilograms, grams, millilitres, or litres, have taken advantage of it for profit.

Where you used to buy a quart of milk, you now get a litre, just slightly less than a quart. (It takes 4.5 litres to make a gallon, compared to 4 quarts to a gallon).

Where you used to buy a 5 pound bag of sugar, you now get 2 kilograms, which is only 4.4 pounds.

Problem is that my generation, who learned, and grew up, with the old measurement system, are seeing the same prices charged, but for less product. The younger generation, who have grown up with the metric system wouldn't know any better.

Our metric Canadian dollar is only worth .83 cents today..

Fight the metric system if you know what's good for you.

My Layena just came down from 13.99 to 11.99. Scratch is about 12.00. I was paying 8.59 for Layena in January. I know corn went through the roof in the spring due to ethanol production. Late summer...my eggs quit selling right about the time feed was 15.00 a bag for the Layena. My hubby had a stroke!

Then the hens quit laying due to fall and moulting. Now prices for eggs are back up in Walmart so eggs are taking off again, but laying is still slow!!!

What stress!!... I could play the market and have less stress! I tried Atwoods feed, but it's only a 40 lb. sack and I noticed a real difference in shell quality (use oyster too) and meat spots. So I switched back to Layena and the egg quality shot up right away. Will fork over the cash for Layena as long as possible. Buying about 150 lbs of each every 6 weeks... for 21 layers and 20 teenagers. I don't free feed. They get 1 scoop in each feeder every day and they have to finish it. Sometimes they do... sometimes they don't. I give one handful of scratch for every 2 chickens and play that by ear depending on other snacks. I have been stuffing them full of pumpkins this fall. That's my feed theory.
