Hi!
I need to use up this cattle b complex anyway and it wouldn’t be terrible for them to have some. Any advice appreciated!

Why are you administering vitamin B complex to nine ducks? It'd be easier to sprinkle a few ML's over some treats and offer it to them that way.

Contrary to what people may say, stick to the dosage, vitamin B complex can be overdosed., and have negative effects over a longer period of time. Here is a segment from this thread.

"If you search "Can I overdose my duckling on niacin?" you'll likely end up finding several answers claiming, that you can't since niacin is water-soluble and isn't stored in the body like other vitamins, but just passes through without being stored into any tissue.

The problem with this claim is humans, and dogs can have serious side effects when given too much niacin, so why can't birds?

I decided to research this a bit more, and found this link which states,

"Limited research indicated that nicotinic acid and nicotinamide are toxic at dietary intakes greater than about 350 mg per kg (160 mg per lb) of body weight per day (NRC, 1987). Clinical signs for niacin toxicosis in chicks include reduced egg production, growth retardation, short legs and coarse, dense feathering. High dietary levels of niacin (0.75% to 2.0%) fed to broilers were detrimental to dimensions and mechanical properties of bone (Johnson et al., 1992; 1995; Leeson and Summers, 2001). There was no change in the mineral content of the tibia, but bone strength decreased with increased susceptibility to fracture."

That said, it appears niacin can actually have reverse effects when birds are given too much, and can cause a weakened overall bone strength, as well as increased susceptibility to fracture. "

Thank you so much for your response I have wondered this for a while! The bottle has an expiration date for in a few months so I was going to give them some to try to use it up, but it sounds like without reason it's not the best idea. If you've seen my other thread about Iris limping I'll just give her the 1 ml on treats like I have in the past with my ducks. And I'm not going to worry about the expiration date, it's not worth making my ducks sick over.
Thanks again! :)

Why would it not be a good idea to give them the B complex?

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. It's not the best idea to give them complex if they don't have an issue right? Because it can cause issues?
Thanks!

No, B complex is actually beneficial to ducks, just don't give them too much, or it can actually have reverse effects and cause weakened bone structure, etc. Of course, to do that, it would have to be given for an extended period of time.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to give all nine B complex?

That’s what I’m trying to say. Just to use it up is part of the reason trying not to waste it. Iris does have an injury of some kind and I gave her some yesterday she is the only one limping.
Thanks!

Gotcha! I was a little confused. Personally, I use a lot of the medications around here past their expiration date. I have some B complex that's a year past its expiration date, and it still works pretty well, probably not as effective as a new bottle, but still works. If you want to use up the rest, go for it, just stick to the dosage.

That’s really good to know thank you so much!!! I think I’ll give them a dose here and there but if you’ve got some that’s past due and they’re fine maybe I’ll just hang on to it even after the expiration date it’s been very useful for my flock when they’ve started limping even if I didn’t know why.
Thanks again!😉
