Hello

My coop is done! I am going to be using the deep litter method and I just got it my DE. I am unsure of how much I should spread into my pine chips. I have about a 3 inch thick layer of pine chips in there now, and the inside measures 4 x 4. My run is about 80 sq feet, with some straw spread around just on top of some weeds and dirt, should I put some in there too?

Thanks.

You don't need to use DE for deep litter.

If you *choose* to, use as little as possible, preferably under the bedding rather than *on* it, so that there isnt' a bunch of DE dust flying around.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

i use a flour sifter and sprinkle it on top, then put out scratch feed and my chickens turn it about for me. i put out about 4 to 6 cups of de to a 8 x 12 coop. i usually put it in while the chickens are out free ranging.

I haven't got a "poop board" up yet, DH doesn't think we need it so Yes, I do use DE/Stall dry in my coop over my deep litter method. I sprinkle it mostly under the roosts and not too much at a time. A little goes a long way!!

I thought from what I read that it helped dry up the poo in the inside the coop and cut down on the odor.

I add a bit of DE before putting clean bedding in and also sprinkle a bit in the bedding and 'stir' it in when I'm 'spot cleaning'. I use maybe 1/3 cup max for my 4x4 coop.

Also, my motivation for using DE is for a mite/insect deterent...

It does help dry up the poop and it does help with odor control, it is also known for helping with mites, and if ingested internal parasites.

Yeah, but so does sensible management

Honestly, you do not need DE. You can use it if you want -- but at least use it sensibly and minimally, as mineral dust is not particularly good for anyone's lungs, peoples' or chickens -- but by no means do you have to.

Farmers were using deep litter for centuries and centuries before DE ever became available. That should tell you something
