How much DE should I use in this 4x4 dust pit? I got a 40lb bag. The instructions are for large scale feeders, not small dust pits so I'm need some advice please. The guy at the feed store said 1/2 lb but that seems awful low but then again I have no idea. It is food grade DE.
As long as you have dirt or sand to mix it with, you really can't put too much. In a bathing area that size, I'd probably mix in a cup or two....
I punched holes in an old coffee creamer tub so that I can squirt/shake DE out like talcum powder. It comes in handy to squirt a little on pudding poos or really watery poos that you're trying to clean up - dries them right up...lol Works great on dropping boards, if you use those...
I would use a couple of cups, the stuff works great! Your pit is awesome, I'm gonna have to make one myself! I dust my birds and use it in their feed too.
This is from the day I installed it. I hadn't even filled it with dirt before they jumped in and started dusting. With our hot weather this week they stay in it.
OK, a couple of cups of DE in the bath, and I guess I can sprinkle it on the ground to dry up the poo too? OK, great.
p.s. should I wear a cheap mask (the white kind you see in Asian when everyone has a cold) when handling it?
Since you're working with it outside, you should be fine. I do hold my breath when I'm mixing it into the bedding inside the coop.
I built a HUGE sandbox for my chickens last summer, and within a week they were digging holes along the OUTSIDE of it...LOL. They do enjoy it though on really hot days.
