I have a year old jersey bull, and a lady called me today and wanted to breed her cow with him. She said she is in heat today. We have the space to do a breeding, but I have no idea on what I should ask for a breeding fee. Can anyone give me an Idea?
Thanks

do what you think is fair. we have always just had beefy mixes so were never concerned with anything but meat quality.

We would have charged around $50 at least for a breeding with our bull.

(Edited for BIG typo, lol)

Thank you for your comment. I know with dogs, for a stud fee you do the price you'd sell a pup for...is that comparable to cows as well?

You can artificially inseminate to a great bull for about 25 dollars for the semen and whatever the inseminator charges. I think if you get 25 dollars to breed a cow you have hit a home run.

It would take a very special bull to justify 500 dollars.

additionally she had better hurry cows do not have a long ovulation cycle.

$500 is an outrageous amount! especially if the bull does not have pedigreed genetics and isnt used for showing purposes.

As a cattle farmer, cows/bulls can carry venereal diseases that can cause the cow to abort or cause fertility issues with your bull. It would be wise to ensure the cow in question is healthy.

AI'ing is not as cheap as you might think. There is the tank to rent and charge and the tech to do it plus the semen storage and CIDR and shots and the patch.
It adds up fast.

The $25 for dairey semen is just about right. I paid that for some a couple years ago.

You have 12 hours to breed a cow once she is in standing heat. She will cycle again in 3 weeks.

I don't know, I bred to one of the leading Angus bulls in the breed only a couple of years ago. There any number of techs in the area that will come by and breed a cow for way under a hundred bucks. They have the tank and the whole thing that travels with them.

Way less than 500 that is for sure

Geez, I wish the word would spread on these prices to the horsey set! Anyone who has ever had a horse AI'd would agree with me!

Horses are a whole different deal. I have spent way over a thousand dollars to breed a mare through a season and that was just for the vet etc. The semen was about that as well.

Cows, are normally inseminated the day they go into standing heat, no ultra sound no regimate or however that is spelled no shipping semen two or three times. Yowser that was a lot of money.

And yes Bleenie you are making a lot more sense now. Yikes I wanted to see that 500 dollar stud fee bull. LOL
