How much feed per chick?

Hello all,

I am brand new, and in a little over a week we'll be getting our first chicks! So excited, and trying to make sure I learn as much as I can.

We've ordered six chicks, and I am trying to figure out how big a bag of feed I can buy without it spoiling before they can use it. I see 25 lb. bags of chick starter, and I'm unclear how much my 6 chicks will eat before they need to be switched to adult laying feed. Or if they will eat more than that.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance for help!

Get the big bag. Keep it dry and cool and it won't spoil before they eat it all. Trust me, you'll free feed them as much as they want and you'll be surprised at how quickly they eat through it.

Even if you are careful about waste you will go through 2-25 pound bags by 10 weeks of age. At that point you could put them on grower feed, if you want the "medicated" feed to work it's way out by the time they start laying eggs, then when the first egg appears switch them all over to layer feed for the calcium.
