How much roost space do standard size chickens need in a coop?

About a foot per chicken. In high heat areas more is better as they like to spread out a bit.

I like the foot per chicken suggestion, but at times have issues with first birds up not making way for others when all access roost from same direction. Then make so more access points or make so there are more actual roosts.

Height of roost and size of coop can make a difference.
You can get way with less roost length is they don't have to fly up to roost.
Flying down from roost needs space to land without crashing into something.

Ok, I wanted the roosts to be about 4-5 feet of the ground, and 1-2 feet away from the compost pile.

I have not built it yet.
I did post a diagram of what it would look like.
The coop will be a cattle panel hoop coop, so it may not be the best in the winter, so I wanted to have a compost pile to heat up the chickens.
