How much space should I give my chickens?

We are moving to land with two acres and bringing along our chickens! We want them to have as much more space then they used to have. However we only have electric fencing that the chickens could easily get out. We also live next to a rail road. Besides when they get broody, would they stay close to their food and water in the day time?

Depends on the bird. I have some who barely leave the run and some that I have to get when they go down the road (about 3/4 of a mile from the run)

I wouldn't count on any of your chickens staying close. Besides going in at night and being broody as you said, they will wander pretty far from the run.

Unless your chickens are high flyers, a cheap option is to get some hardware cloth or chicken wire and put it around the area you want. Or if there is a fence all the way around your property and they know the way back to the coop, just take advantage of that.
