How necessary is a hydrometer?

I think you mean hygrometer and I'd say pretty necessary if you want to know where your incubator stands at, especially for lockdown. Though I'm not an incubator expert myself. Are you sure you can't find one locally? Have you checked pet stores in the reptile section, or a home goods store or even a hardware store?

We are in a very small town. No pet stores or home goods stores. The only hardware is a small locally owned that doesn’t even carry outdoor thermometers. :hmm
Thank you for the correction though I did mean hygrometer

wow yeah that's kinda small, I'm envious though. I only mentioned the difference in case that was part of the issue of finding one.

Have you already started incubating? Have you added water? Years ago when I was a teen in the cavemen days, we never added any water to hatch out eggs. Just put the eggs in the incubator and turned it on 🤷‍♀️ not the best advice but it worked because we always did that during high humidity months like May and June. But not having a hygrometer now would feel like flying blind.

I haven’t started yet. I’m set to start tomorrow. It’s definitely humid here lol. We’ve gotten over 5 inches of rain this week. I think I’m just not going to worry too much about it follow the incubator directions and just put one on order so that it gets here before lockdown.

Well I started this afternoon so hopefully we'll both have chicks very soon 🤞
