How OCD do I need to be about breeder temp?

Ok, so brooder has been set up for 24hrs....awaiting the new family members. I understand the initial temp for day olds is 90 degrees, lowering by 5 weekly. I have a 100w red bulb in my brooder but can't seem to get exactly 90 degree temp...it fluctuates from about 87 to just over 90.

Could be that the thermometer isn't all that accurate, but do I really have to stress this or is "just about" ok?

Will post pics when babies come home any minute now...I swear I haven't been this excited about anything since the birth of my own human babies! lol

Not to worry! That sound great.....no need to be super duper exacting! Good luck with your new additions! I'm sure they'll be fine with you looking after them.

Just watch the chicks and listen to them. They will let you know if they are comfortable. I took the thermometer out on day three the first tiem I brooded. They kept pooping on it and I couldn't see the temp anyway. I haven't used one since. When they are cold they peep like crazy and huddle up under the lamp. If they are hot they stay on the fringes. When they are comfy they will range about everywhere and make happy, contented little noises. Adjust the thermostat accordingly.

Edited to add- I just saw that you are getting ducks. I brood chicks, but I'm betting the ducks are the same way.

Thank you! Wasn't sure how exact things have to be, it's scary when I have heard stories of things gone wrong with incubating/brooding. I was going to incubate too, but heard horror stories of ppl not doing it right (fluctuating temps, not rolling eggs right) and it scared me so...I got day olds.

I really want to make sure nothing happens to these cute little fluff-butts.

I think we're all set then! Brooder is all heated, food ready (I'll wait to fill up water so it can be fresh), and lots of love waiting the little gals.
