Friends and I in some disagreement about how often we need to move our chicken tractor. We have 13 chickens in it and it's 4 feet by 7 feet. I think once a week would be good, but they're little still and in tall grass and they don't peck it all the way down in a week. I just think it's a good sanitary measure to move it once a week because the grass gets matted and poopy. Others think they need to get further down to dirt to get enough grit. Anyone have opinions?

Thanks!

I think it's more about your grass than the chickens. A lot of people move theirs daily to try and avoid having the chickens completely kill the grass.

When mine where younger i moved it every other week but i move it every week..

I move mine once a day so that they get fresh grass, bugs, bugs and more bugs. Clover, weeds, grass.

And so that they dont tear up my yard and make bald spots.

hope this helps

I have 21 cornish x that are 8 weeks old and I move it twice a day now, and it's still pretty messy

I'm moving ours daily-because that way, after a day or rain, you can't even tell where it was. I like that they are always on fresh grass and not getting dirty, eating dirty grass, or walking on poo.

Move it however often you want. If the ground is starting to get pretty pooey, either move the tractor or put down bedding to separate chicks from poo. (Obviously this will look weird on a lawn, but if this is not 'lawn' then it may not matter)

Everyone with a tractor has different intentions, so there is no one size fits all rule

Good luck, have fun,
