A possum attacked my chicken two days ago.
She has a wound on the top of her head and on one cheek. The side of her face is very swollen, and she is not moving much. She will not eat or drink on her own. I'm giving her pedialyte + liquid-y food through a syringe. Cleaned the wound, and applied an antiseptic liquid and antibiotic ointment. She's inside a dog crate next to me. There is a space heater keeping her warm.
I've read previous posts about similar injuries and treatment. It was such a help and great advise. I'm following the guidelines.
I have two questions:
1. How often should I clean the wound? I used saline solution + iodine once, the day of the attack. Should I clean daily and re-apply the ointment?
2. When I give fluids through the syringe, I put drops on the tip of her beak, she drinks just a bit, but most spills all over the floor. I'm worried she is not getting enough. Would it be better to open her beak and put the syringe in her mouth?
