How old do chicks need to be before they can have scratch?

My chicks are 6 weeks old. Can they have scratch yet?

I gave mine just a little bitty bit at that age. They adored it but I knew it really wasn't that good for them. Some people soak it beforehand also so it can be digested easier for the little babies.

I figured it was like giving a piece of chocolate cake to a toddler but my chicks just freaked over it! And at 16 weeks they still freak over it as do all my chickens.

Can't wait till it is much colder and I can give them a bit more at night to help them stay warm. I figure I will be like their love for life at that point!
