How old is this chick/embryo day 18

I got 10 eggs 18 days ago 4 died early death and another broke but yesterday wad day 17 and when i saw some black goo coming out of one of the eggs so i took it out and he was dead (which i knew he would be but) he was moving just the other day and looked really healthy and almost filled the whole egg but when i cracked him he did not look like a day 17 egg he had almost no down and was really small id day an inch and a half so i just want to know why he was so small at day 17 i also have one day 18 still alive i saw before (lockdown well sort of the eggs are under a broody BO) and he does not even cover half the eggs (not counting the are cell) did my broody do somthing wrong i was really cold one day and she got off the nest for about 30 minutes thanks for any help im new to this whole broody hatching thing I'm used to incubator hatching this same hen has gone before but all of her fertile eggs died one did hatch but she ate it cause he had alittle yolk on his(her) body sad.png

Eggs can go dormant if allowed to go cold, perhaps because they aren't covered properly or because the mother gets off for too long. I had a hen hatch her eggs out late, but many of them still survived, even though she was stuck off of them for probably over an hour. I think eggs that go dormant are more likely to die before hatching.

Hens leave their nest daily so unless it was REALLY cold that should not compromise the eggs, especially in 30 minutes time. It sounds like developmentally he was delayed. Which could be a number of reasons. Is your hen big enough to cover all the eggs in the clutch successfully?

Yes she is she is a pretty big BO and only had 10 eggs but covered them all and i removed 5 befor day 14 because i knew they were all dead
