How soon for nesting boxes?

When I move my chicks into the coop, do I have to have nesting boxes already in there or can I wait a few months?

Reason I ask is I'm going to have a smaller sized temporary coop for the first month or so before I get my full sized one ready.

They won't need nesting boxes until they lay- usually 5 or 6 months of age. You don't want them pooping and sleeping in them anyway...no big deal to not install them until close to the POL (point of lay).

I would have them in there by 16 week just in case you got a breed that starts early. Plus pullets like to practice before they really start laying.
