We're considering expanding our flock, but I have concerns about how reliable demand for eggs is.
It costs us $40 - $50 a month to feed our girls, a little less in the summer when we're supplementing with lots of veg from the gardens. We're selling about 5 dozen a week and could sell more easily; but I don't want to expand the flock, increase our expense and then have no buyers for eggs and a $70/month feed bill.
What are any of your all's experiences with selling eggs from your hobby flocks?
We live in a semi-rural area, and the fact that our eggs are "organic, cage-free" and the "buy local" sentiment seems to be fueling demand.
Just to be clear, we have no delusions of making money at this; we got the chickens primarily as pets and for fun; but I wouldn't mind losing *less* money or in my wildest dreams, breaking even.
