Hi all,
We are new to raising turkeys for 4-H projects. We have the basics down as far as feed quality, raising the feed/water, weighing, and handing each day. However, any information or tips would be greatly appreciated. My main question is this: how do you 'cane train' a turkey? Our county has this requirement for showing turkeys at the fair. Unfortunately, with the poultry ban, we will not be showing at the fair, but would like to perfect this before next year. Our turkeys were kept in our garage in a large "kennel' and were let out at various times as a flock to stretch their legs. Knowing that they needed to be 'cane trained', we have been guiding them gently with our hands(shaped in an 'L') around their necks. They have now been moved to our hoop coop outside. We have been using a cane to guide them one by one to be weighed but, haven't had much luck. (they all want to get back to their buddies) I understand this...they are flock birds. If anyone has any tips about this or raising turkeys in general we would be very greatful for the help!
