A magpie flew into the side of our car just as we were slowing down so he’s not hurt just in shock, I frantically picked him up without thinking but idk how to deal with wild birds let alone one in shock :( I probably should’ve left him there but he’s only young. He’s currently in an old bird cage outside with some water, mealworms and duckling feed as it was the only thing I had on hand. What should I do? I’m thinking of putting him back where he was so his family can find him

the magpie can use his wings, legs, neck and jaw but isn’t eating or drinking

Thanks for looking out for this bird. Many times victims of a window or car strike are just stunned and disoriented. You did the right thing by moving him, easy for the bird to get stepped on/ run over/ eaten etc in that state. Did you release him near where he was found?

For future reference, the best thing to do is not offer food or water but keep the bird calm in a dark space like a cardboard box or paper bag and transport it to the nearest wildlife rehabber.

Thank you and yes we put him over near where he hit our car :)
