How to entertain a single chick

Hi all!

I need some advice! I have a beautiful Easter Egger chick. My Broodie had 21 eggs and this is the only chick that hatched. She is a beautiful chick (I say she only because I really really really want her to be a girl, but if she is a he then I have a good home where he can help my best friend with her flock)

My issue is this. ... She loves me and can't stand being apart from me. I can't sit there and look at her all day but when I leave she screams for me until I come back. She jumps trying to get to me and will only sleep if I put my hand on her back. I'm sure that she is so dependant because she is a single lonely chick. She has a stuffed animal she snuggles and sleeps with. She had a small blanket that she likes to get under but when she is awake all she does is jump and scream to be held where she proceeds nest in my hair on my shoulder.

Anyone have an idea of things to keep her entertained and happy when I'm away? Today she is 4 days old.

Thanks a ton!

If not then get a mirror or stuffed animals or another chick friend chickens are really social they should have a buddy

No mom isn't caring for her. My coop isn't really set up for chicks. My nesting boxes are high and I was frightened of a fall so she is in the house with me. I have always bought my hens grown so baby chicks are new for me. She had a stuffed animal she lives but the mirror is a great idea! Thanks! I will get her one tomorrow. I thought my plum head parrot would keep her company but he is just jealous another bird had my attention. Lol...

Keep the ideas coming!

Well I took your advice and have Godiva a mirror. She seems a little more entertained but still rather watch YouTube videos. My DH downloaded that app where you squish ants on a picnic table, She LOVES that but if you make too many wrong clicks it ends the game. I need that game on an endless loop. Lol....

Anyone have more ideas?

Omg... I am way too old to be a mom too a new born again! In fact this chick cries more than my son ever did! I hadn't a clue how to console her. Please please please I need ideas! !! No one can sleep in the house. Her screams are unbearable! A sun conure has nothing on this tiny chick! I just can not bring a5 day old chicken into bed with me and my husband to sleep. That might be the only thing we can do. .. help! Ideas. ... anything! !!! Why didn't any of the books mention that a baby chick in the house is worse than having triplet newborns with colic? ?????

I know what you mean!! I had a single egg hatch two days ago and she is noisy! She screams when I put her down. She has had to go to work with me and I have resorted to sleeping with her! Three days ago I never would've believed that I would consider that but sleep is a need! Unfortunately, she doesn't seem at all interested in stuffed animals or mirrors. Thankfully, I have a batch of eggs due to hatch tomorrow!!!

All I can say is that it does get easier. I decided the mirror was making her worse and took it out of the cage, the saving grace was something my DH made for her. He took a plastic bowl turned it upside down and cut an opening to make a little cave, then he lined it with her blanket. She loves it! Tuck her in and she sleeps soundly all night. She climbs on top and plays during the day and sleeps inside at night. She is a much happier cheeping girl rather than a terrified screeching baby. I completely understand you giving into sleeping with her tho! If the bowl cave hadn't worked then she would have ended up in my bed too! Good luck and hope your new hatchlings make great nest mates with your chick -a-dee!

I am having the same problem. my very first egg hatched today (the only one) and she screams until I come in and pick her up. I will try the bowl method :) thanks!
