How to get an ostriches eggs awa from it?

Well here's the deal. Put yourself in your ostriches' 'shoes'. How do they view you when they see you? Threat, flock, food?

When mine are chicks, I like to go out and sit down in their nursery and just hang out. If they want to come see me, they do. If not, I don't push the issue. I go out there multiple times each day and usually before feeding. As they get more used to me, they will start following me around like puppies. I might have superworms, food, greens, whatever :)

So to get them to go to their next grow out area, I just open the gate and walk. They follow. And the ones that don't? Well they like to eat. So down goes the food. Over goes the majority of the flock. The stragglers will follow.

As they get to be adults, they learn to come when they are called... There might be a finger to peck, or maybe a ring... or maybe food. I might just want to go for a walk or introduce them to a visitor. But whatever the case, I always try to make it interesting for the bird.

NEVER approach a nest when the birds who built it or are laying it are around the nest or brooding. No matter how good your 'relationship' with your birds is, they will ALWAYS view your approach as a threat. This can lead to a panic. Eggs can get broken or worse, they can come after you. When one of these big birds is ******, they'll go after anything in their vicinity to 'clear the field'. You can get hurt birds that were just coming over to check out the commotion you just caused.

We gather our eggs in the morning and evening. I only go out in mid day when we have rain. The reason I do the am/pm thing is simple. That's feeding and supplemental feeding time for my flock. They all come together and eat, then split up. I usually hang out with the birds and keep them occupied with feeding. We check all the nests before the food goes down to see who has what where. Then with the food on the ground, my wife will hop the fences, scoop up the eggs, and be gone before the birds know she was there.

Avoid confrontation at all costs. Nothing good will come of it. They are faster than you, less intelligent than you, have an on and off switch on their 'tempers' which is quick, and can lay your guts open with one kick as you probably already know :)

You just need to be smarter than the bird :D
