Help please. We have a 3 1/2 week old Ameraucana that was prescribed antibiotics. It has definitely helped her (been giving it to her since Friday - 4 days). Originally we were able to put it in a tiny bit of her food mixed with a tiny bit of hard boiled egg. It took awhile to coax her to eat it but eventually we got it down her. Last night no amount of coaxing would help. This morning- same thing. So she has already missed one dose and I don’t want her to miss anymore - it has brought her back to us. Any ideas on how to get her to eat these tiny drops would help. Thank you.

Separate the chick, place the medication in the food, leave the food with the chick. Do not offer other food. The chick will eat eventually.
She has been separated because we were afraid that she might be contagious. Since she has been on antibiotics for a few days, we felt comfortable that she was no longer a threat to the rest of the chicks so we put another chick in with her to gradually re-acquaint her to the rest. We have tried to leave just the food with the medication in it before but she seems to go on a hunger strike when we do that. :he

She will eat when she gets hungry if there is food available. You’ve got to be patient with it.

If you are confident that the problem is non infectious, put her back with her flock. Separation just increases the stress on the chicken.
Never put antibiotics in feed unless you are hand feeding and can make sure the entire dose is consumed at that sitting.
If the antibiotic comes as a crushable pill and isn't large then the best way is to open the fowls beak and pop it down their throat. You can be certain that the full does has been given and at the right time.
You can also crush the pill and mix it with water and tube feed it.
Here is an article on how to do this.

Thank you. Great information. We will try that. Wish us luck! Looks like we will need it.

I want to thank everyone for your help and to let you know that Wilma is doing well. We were able to finish her antibiotics schedule and reintroduce her back in with her broode-buddies. It was heartwarming to see how affectionate she was to the others when we put her back in. When I started this adventure I knew it would be fun but I didn’t understand how amazing these little beings would be. How they would work their way into your heart in such a short time. Their personalities are unique and loving. I am officially smitten. :love
