How to get rid of mites from VENT area

I'm sorry you lost Popcorn. 😢

The parasite was killed with wood ash which is still dusting the vent area. Looks like a grey scab.

I think she died of flystrike from your description. This would not infect the other birds unless they get wet goopy butts for the maggots to develop in. Check the link on flystrike that Eggsessive posted.

Flystrike also explains why you lost her so quickly. Lice and mites can kill, but usually they weaken the chicken slowly. Flystrike can be more invasive, and cause shock.

Why is the scab gray? And why did a scab happen? Can either lice or mites survive inside the hen?

One of my other hens (Doña) was attacked with fly strike about at the same time I noticed something wrong with Popcorn (which was last Thursday). I will hold myself fully accountable for her death. One, for not checking her fully and two, for thinking that it was her diet that gave her reason to walk around so slowly. I feel that this death was fully preventable. I was so focused on healing Doña that I failed to pay very much attention to Popcorn for the first few days because she was still eating and walking and wow. You get so attached to these little peeps so to see them go really hurts. But I will learn. Her loss doesn't have to be in vain.

Thank you for your condolences love. She would be happy to know fellow hen parents mourn her loss. & stay safe during these trying times.
