I know I know so simple, I tried doing a search and didnt see any of the "how to" parts. Just that its okay to, and helps entertain chickens

I've hung cabbage for them. I used a knitting needle to poke a hole through the core of the cabbage, and a piece of wire with a crook in one end to thread some baling twine through. Then I tied a stick at the bottom of the cabbage and hung it from one of the roosts. Don't see how lettuce would be too much different.

There is one on Ebay selling some of those cabbage or lettuce "cages" and as far as I know, it worked pretty well. I think this gal was an old BYCer if I remember right!

We actually put ours in a hay net like you buy for horses....and then attached it to the outside wall of the coop.

ETA: I bought the hay net at Tractor Supply for less than $5 They come in different colors and are a nylon type material.

Update:

I just tied some string (hot pink yay!) around it several times...hung it from the ceiling for them.
At first they were scared of the thing, swinging and bobbing.

I closed up the brooder and went to bed...next morning all I found was a lone string
