Oh and also.... I was just wandering down in one of our paddocks with my sister and I heard this REALLY loud bird call that sounded a lot like some kind of quail... Are there any wild quails in the bottom of the south island in New zealand? Thanks for all the help!

Ok I looked at the one of the links and did not need any thing else... How else can you hatch quail eggs without an incubator? I need all the help I can get because my quail will start laying soon and I need an idea. One more thing, there is a reserve strip filled with pine trees across our neighbours paddock and it is kind of like a slope into farm lands, would that be an ideal place to set free any unwanted males? Or can you even set free any at all? I own cournix by the way..

And I also need lots of breeding information like how to tell the boys from the girls and how old to seperate them and that sort of stuff...

Thanks!

Coturnix have ZERO survival instincts, it would probably be more humane to smash them with a hammer than set them free.

It's possible this is what you heard calling. Apparently they have been introduced in NZ. NZ had it's own quail species but from what I've seen they are extinct.

Here are some links that will help. Read them all even if they seem repetitive, each has their own informational gems.

The real problem with releasing coturnix is that they are migratory birds. They WILL migrate every year (assuming you can actually get the stupid things to survive). When they migrate, you will never see them again. The US fish and game has tried releasing them several times in the past. They have no idea where they went or what happened to them once they "migrated".
