I have two 2 month old Australorps, they are doing great. Very sweet, love the kids already. They are definitely a pair. They get extremely stressed if we hold one out of the sight of the other. I'd like 2 more chickens. My daughter would like a Barred Rock, and I'd like an Ameracauna for the pretty eggs. Here's my question: What is the time frame to introduce young chicks/pullets to each other? Should I make sure that I get the other two at the same time, so maybe they'll have 2 teams of 2? If that makes sense. Thanks so much for all your help. This forum has been the best info. source I've found yet.

When I started raising chickens we got 2 sets of 3 chicks about 3 months apart. I really like the buddy-system and like your idea of getting a pair so they can have a friend.

The older batch was established in the coop when it came time to introduce the younger crowd (you need to wait until they are fully adult-feathered before combining) . We allowed them to see each other during the day by putting a temporary pen next to the established run. We then added the younger set at night at the same time removing the dominant pullet from the group and stashing her in a dog crate in the house. There was minimal pecking and so we combined the dominant one back in the next evening. Not sure if that was necessary, but was recommended by an experienced friend and worked for us.

Good luck with your chicken adventure!

That's some great advice. Thanks!!! I do have one dominant hen. So I'll keep it mind to have her stashed for a night.
