How to keep coons from getting my chicks/hens

I too live in a city. I use a havahart live trap that I use every once in a while (BTW Once you catch a cat it usually dont get in the trap ever again) and on top of that I have a electric fence around my pen. I got a great cheap one at ace.Around 25 dollars. Never had a problem after that. All my pens are made of just 1inch chicken wire. I feel this is your best bet to never worry about anything getting at em.

Some of the cats near my place are stupid. i've caught the same cat over and over. First time took it to animal control. The other times I called the owner to come get the cat out of my trap. I think it was the bait I was using.... Can of sardines. The kitty couldn't resist it. I was trying to catch possum and that seems to work best for catching them in my area.

I can get the stuff for electric fence from my parents. Actually thought about doing one around the edges of my yard above the fence anyway. It would keep critters out of my yard that could give my dogs worms (coons).

I know i need to start working on building the chicken pen. But I don't even have chicks hatched yet.

Pens always first priority.I love an electric fence. It keeps about all predators out. Next time you catch that stupid cat.Shake the cage and yell at him bebore you let him out so he equates it to a bad experience.

You are allowed to defend your chickens in the city. You defend them by keeping them in housing that the predators can't break into.

You can live trap vermin. In some places Animal Control will put trapped raccoons to sleep for you for free. Be careful with raccoons, especially on the east Coast. They are a major vector for rabies. If you trap one, do not allow it to bite or scratch you.
