How to mak a hen go broody?

You really can't make them but you are starting with a very broody prone breed. Perhaps if you put a bunch of fake eggs or golf balls in the nest it may help.

well it might have been luck but i got 2 of my hens to go broody. i did a search on byc and followed the instructions. i was desperate as a fox killed 8 of my chickens but i had fertile eggs and so with those i made a tempting nest and put them in it and stuck my reluctant hen ...orpington...on the top. did it at dusk and shut her in. i let her out twice a day for 20 mins to eat, drink and poop . at first she was only too glad to escape but after 3-4 days she got broody. i candled at 7 days and 14 days and all looked well. they are due to hatch today.

i did the same with another hen a week later, assuming the ones still being laid might be fertile. this time though i sat her on duff eggs from the fridge. after 4 days she too was broody and now stays by choice. she now has the real thing under her but the ones from the fridge are in the incubator because i discovered embryo's in them.

so perhaps if it's the right breed ....2nd hen is a pekin....and the right time of year, spring. it can be done???

I really don't know if this helps but I leave chalk eggs in a few of the nest. I have one setting on chalk eggs now waiting until I get my hatching eggs which should be here soon.
