Hi,

I'm new to BYC and would like to ask a few questions regarding Pekin Ducklings that I am expecting soon. I've got a mummy duck sitting on some eggs and would like to raise some but let her raise some as well. I am planning on raising 2 or 3 babies in my brooder.

So I want to make a brooder and already have a plan ready, just need to build it. All I need is to know a couple of things before my little fluff balls arrive!!

So heres what i'de like to know:.... What type of heat lamp do I need? AND where do I put it in the brooder? HOW do I put it in the brooder?

Also how long do Pekins need to be in the brooder for? When can I turn the heat lamp off?

Thanks so much for your time!!
Any advice/tips is very much appreciated.

Hi!! First off, welcome!!

Ok. It is best to have the heat lamp on a side. So there is a spot to get away from it if/when they get to hot. So like have it on the right so they can go to the left side if they get to hot.

Also if you go to a local pet shop, they can recommend one. I use one that isn't really hot. And not a coloured one.

For the first week or so, have it on. 24/7. But because they are ducks they won't need it for as long as chicks do. After about a week, just have it on at night and on cold/rainy days. And once they get feathered wings, they should be fine with out the heat lamp!!! But if you check them and they feel a bit cold, it won't hurt to put it on for a bit. If you have the heat lamp on them for to long when they are older, they will get what you call "angel wings" it doesn't affect them in any way, but it does look a bit funny.

If the brooder box will be outside, have it on legs. So it's of the cold ground. And if it's in side, best for it to be on carpet or on a sorta shelf. Not to high tho.

I will post a picture of mine in the next couple of days :)

Hope I helped out!! Feel free to message me if you need anything else!! GOOD LUCK!!

They have some stuff in and under, but ignore that.
At night we cover up the wire part (which our cat sat on and broke) so they don't get to cold
Hope I help!!
