that's not always true, I had a flock of all hens that were laying and the alpha hen crowed and did the roosters job of warning the other hens, unfortunately had to get a real rooster due to one of my neighbors tried taking a broody hen off her nest 3 days before hatch and got attacked so they killed her.

just in case you were wondering how all hens were brooding, I borrowed a friends Rooster for a bit
