Q: Now that the weather is becoming cooler and they’re spending more time inside, my birds are picking on each other. How can I keep the peace in my coop?

A: There are many reasons hens may get too aggressive. If they’re “cooped up” for the fall or winter, they may be too crowded or stressed out.

First, determine the cause of stress. Ask:
· Are the hens too crowded?
· Do they ever run out of feed or water?
· Are they too hot or cold?
· Is there a predator in the area?
· Is there something outside the coop causing them distress?

The next step sounds easy: simply remove the stressor. It may be necessary to separate a few members of the flock during this time to cool their jets.

You could also try redirecting their pecking onto a more appropriate source than each other. A Purina® Flock Block may provide a better option for birds to peck at and can serve as a boredom buster.

Do your chickens like Flock Blocks? Yes or no?

Before I knew my hen was actually a Rooster, he was quarantined along with 2 of my new chicks/hens (we got them at the same time). After quarantine, they were let into the flock. After my roo grew a bit and started being the king of the flock, he started chasing the 2 chicks away from food, etc. HUH!!
