hi everyone. i have a flock of 13 and there scales on there leg are starting to lift up, i think they might have leg might have leg mites but im not really sure i will try and get some pics for yall. i was wondering how chickens even get leg mites and how to get them out of the coop. i was going to mix vinegar and water and scub the wood and thn let that dry and spray it with the liquid permathrin will that be ok or should i use something else.i was also going to soak there feet in soapy water and put some coconut oil on there legs. what else should i do and how often should i do this. i was going to do it sooner but it has been very cold and we are supposed to have a break from the cold whether this week, but its supposed to get below freezing this weekend. and also how lon untill the leg mites should be gone. thanks everyone

Treat your housing with the Permethrin.
Scaly Leg Mites mainly live under the scales of the legs, but can migrate to other birds, make sure you treat your roosting bars.

Cleaning the legs first to get most of the debris (mite poop) out from under the scales would be helpful, but in cold weather you need to consider whether or not you should get the legs wet. Each bird needs to be dried well if you get the feathers wet.
You can use coconut oil, vaseline, castor oil or similar to smother the mites. Work your oil of choice into and under the scales.

Reapply the oil a couple of times a week until the scales are healed, replaced or smooth.
