Good morning, all. I just joined up, after realizing that most online searches I did on quails eventually led to byc.
We're in an HOA, so quail are going to be our "go to" source of protein in a grid down situation. It's time to learn more now as the food prices are climbing fast. Plus, they're just so darn cute that if anyone DOES see them, they'll agree they are just our pets.
We'll be starting out quite small, with 4 hens on a covered elevated deck with no access from the yard. There's no reason to make any more birds pay for our learning curve.
After considering the Comfortplast cages and realizing they won't be outside predator proof (curses, foiled again!), I'll be converting a 2 layer (bad pun) rabbit hutch to give the girls some room. All this to be in place after Nov. deck repairs.
We're lucky enough to be close to Southwest Game Birds in Topanah AZ. I can drive up there and choose the hens.
I'm looking forward to having to buy egg scissors someday.
