Hello, everyone! I've browsed through BYC over the past few years from the outside, and finally decided to officially join. I don't have any chickens at present, but raised cockatiels and other birds in a backyard aviary 10+ years ago...including a few button quail...and had a couple of barred rock hens roaming around the yard for a year or so. We loved our chickens then, but had to find them a new home when we discovered the city we lived in hadn't given us the correct info about whether or not they were permitted in a subdivision. *sigh* They were great little hens that were given up for egg fostering duties to someone we found that raised large fowl (i.e., pheasants) who reportedly aren't the best at raising their own eggs to hatch.

Well, here we are a long time later still wanting chickens in our yard and we're considering taking the plunge now that the kids are mostly grown. We love our veggie garden and would are itching to add chickens to our yard. I'm a Master Gardener and enjoy time in the yard, and while my yard is slowly turning into a "lush" desert garden, and I do get lots of winged visitors in my yard my neighbor's don't, I'd love to add a little scratching and pecking to the mix!

I have been looking all over the internet at various coop/run options and showing them to my husband (Look, hon, a really nice coop and you won't have to put it together from scratch!), and even found someone locally I may contact when it cools down a bit about building something custom for us with wheels (chicken tractor) we can drag around the yard from one spot to another. But first I want to roam BYC a little closer to see what words of wisdom I can find...esp. for someone who lives in the City in the Sonoran Desert. .

I look forward to my learning curve!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. You may want to join the Arizona state thread to find the best ways to provide heat relief for your flock, as well as the breeds that will tolerate it best. Some folks in very hot areas prefer an open air style coop with two wire mesh walls, and two solid ones to provide air flow. If the weather gets cold, they have solid panels they can cover the wire with.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Lovely to hear you are thinking of getting back into chicken keeping. I'm sure you are going to enjoy it very much. Many of us were lurkers before joining so it's great that you have taken the plunge and joined us here. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC!

And welcome back to poultry! As drumstick diva said, the AZ members on your state thread can give you some advice for what works well in your area. Here's a link to get you there:

Good idea to use a tractor to keep them from digging up your garden work. Just yesterday we turned our girls loose on our garden remains to help us with the clean up work...they do love to pick and scratch.

I like your avatar, what kind of cactus (or succulent?) is that?

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. :o) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.
