Hey! I'm Steve and my girlfriend is Deb. We are in south Scottsdale AZ and have researched the rules for our area and are good with up to 20 hens but no roosters. We got our chicks in November and have enjoyed them everyday. We have 4 silkies - 2 blacks, 1 buff and 1 splash and 1 polish hen. One of our silkies has been crowing and we will need to give him up sometime this spring but we will wait till the last minute. Hopefully he will be the only rooster but we're still not sure about our splash silkie. If anyone has any ideas about silkie hens or roosters from my photos please let me know.

Does anyone have any knowledge to help sex these silkies at 4 months old? I'm noticing that the ones I think are hens have nice round feathers on their heads like Polish hens and the roos have a smaller more spikey hairdoo. I've been told you can't tell with silkies until your rooster lays an egg and your hen crows so time will tell, but it would be fun to get some opinions.

BYC has been so helpful for Deb and I. We've both learned so much and are really glad to have a huge resource like this one.

Thanks all and see ya soon here.

Hi from KY!

I have a few silkies to use as broodys, but I could only tell who was who if I saw them crow or saw them lay an egg! Good luck with that!

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined BYC. Sorry you may have to give up some of your silkies but like you say, layers are nice too. Best of luck with your new chickens
