I'm Virginia, native Houstonian. I have 5 acres in Baytown and 33 acres up in the Davy Crockett National Forest near Ratcliff. You can learn more about me on LinkedIn - search for Virginia Dickenson.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
No, I had gotten 11 chickens and a gorgeous Dominique rooster about 9 years ago. I added three barred rocks to the flock later. I had Araucanas, Plymouths, Dominiques, and Barred.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Sadly, none. We had a mated pair of coyotes sneak in broad daylight and take out most of our chickens. Just wasn't prepared for that. And my Great Pyr dogs were gone at that time.
(3) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

(4) What are some of your other hobbies?
Trailriding, horses (gaited), quilting, making cards, pine needle baskets, decorative beading, sewing, and coming up with crazy alternative building and homesteading stuff.
(5) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My life partner died in 2009 of cancer. Since he died, there has been no one permanent in my life in terms of a significant other, nor am I looking. (I am difficult and complicated and I LIKE IT.)
I tried to run an intentional community on my five acres for over 8 years. There are reasons most of them fail. People want instant gratification for the most part. Homesteading is not that. I have pretty much given up on that dream. I do want to create an eco-trailriding campground and homesteading / crafting skills learning center on my national forest property. I am an educator by trade, so that should work out. Just all about time and money, right?
I am a total nerd/geek. Love tech, scifi, fantasy, costuming. I am 53 yo and YUP, I am STILL in it to win it! Star Wars or Star Trek? This is AMERICA! I don't have to CHOOSE!!!

I am a pretty open book. I am a Blue Dog Democrat with views that are considered liberal in these times, but are actually Constitution in nature. All my doctoral work is in Education, and my undergraduate is in Chemistry. I have accounts on Twitter (eLumenata), Facebook (Virginia Dickenson), and two on LinkedIn (eLumenata and Virginia Dickenson - or they may both be Virginia Dickenson). I am an entrepreneur since the age of 26, and I am a principal in a start up that should be launching next week!
