New chicken owner here, just learning the ropes. We're in a little town called Los Osos, California, which is right on the coast, about half-way between SF and LA. We're raising our flock from chicks, and at this time they're about 12 weeks old. We have a light brahma (Quilton), an ameraucana (Gwenie), a black australorp (Sparrow), and an oprington named Nilla (short for Vanilla.) Our orpington was sold to us as a buff orpington hen, but grew into a white oprington rooster. We can't keep a roo, and are currently working on re-homing him. He's a handsome fellow, full of personality, and crows a lot. I have my suspicions about the australorp, too, and will be posting pics for educated guesses regarding gender. Bummer that we went through a local pet shop to get our birds, and though they guaranteed they were hens (ha ha) they are refusing to live up to their guarantee, and are telling us the roo(s) are our problem. Live and learn, as they say! I'll try to post a pick of our little flock, as it is today.
