Hi! My name is Denise. I live in rural east Texas, and I have had chickens for 10 days now. We ordered 17 chicks from a hatchery (16 different breeds**) and received them on May 25, 2022.

My husband is 98% finished building his own DIY version of a Carolina Coops 6’ x 8’ American hen house. He’ll immediately start building the attached covered run next.

I found this site in my research to see if it would be ok to transition my chicks to the hen house right away, and I thought I should join as I’m sure this won’t be my last quest for information on my chicken journey.

I’m a stay-at-home mom with a beautiful 3-year-old daughter and a wonderful, overworked husband. I enjoy quilting and crocheting amigurumi, and I love playing Euro-style board games. We have two aging small dogs and two fish tanks. If my hubby doesn’t quit the Sunshine Work Program after this chicken coop, I’m hoping he’ll build a goat barn and fence off some pasture next.

**Breeds: Silver Laced Wyandotte, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Cream Legbar, Light Brown Leghorn, Golden Cuckoo Marans, Black Copper Marans, Speckled Sussex, Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock, White Crested Black Polish, Double-Laced Barnevelder, Welsummer, Olive Egger, Partridge Cochin, Frizzle Easter Egger (2 of these, but only one seems to be frizzled), Mottled Cochin Bantam, Mille Fleur d’Uccle Bantam.

Hello, Denise, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Your Polish may run into problems as that mop forms on her head. Have a plan B ready for her.
I hope your hubby ramped up the ventilation in that coop. It's going to be snug for the number of birds you have.
