Hello there!
I'm just getting started on this road that it looks like a lot of y'all have been working on for a very long time. So I guess I need to introduce myself.
I grew up about 10 miles outside of a tiny little blip on the map called Rush Springs Oklahoma, and all my relatives lived in far southeast Texas. We had chickens, cows, goats, ducks, you name it we had it. I even had a golden pheasant at one point. I specifically kept banty chickens and had a big rhode island red hen that would fly in the truck with us when we went to go to town.
Fast forward 20+ years, and I work from home and live in the city. I've got a postage stamp size yard, but my back fence is the end of civilization. We have coyotes, I've seen a bobcat in my back yard, and sitting on my back porch I listen to cows, horses, donkeys, frogs, and all kinds of things. But I miss my chickens. I came across an article in the Dallas news here... http://www.dallasnews.com/lifestyle...20110427-visit-dallas-urban-poultry-coops.ece talking about keeping chickens in an urban enviroment and went "Well that looks neat!" and started reading. Got a letter back from the HOA stating there's nothing against it just this morning, so here I am.
I'm pretty handy with a hammer and saw and am about to go poking around Home Depot and other places looking for scrap lumber and a bag of concrete mix. I could probably build the coop for less than $50 if I'm careful and pay attention.
And that's pretty much it. I'm the outdoorsy type, my husband and I go camping fairly often and I go fishing and hiking every chance I get. No kids, but I've got two dogs... a cocker spaniel named Vaquita and a Carolina dog (American Dingo) named Huyana. She does worry me with one thing.. Huyana has a very strong prey drive. I'm thinking whatever yard that I've got them in has got to be fully fenced in... not just from the dog, but I can also see a red tail hawk nest from my back porch, and they actively hunt the rats in the hay field behind me. How big does their fenced in area need to be??? Ah well, I've got tons to learn and a whole bunch to read.
Thanks so much for having me and have a great day!
