I'm Tina from San Antonio, Texas, and have been lurking this site for well over a year and a half. I think I finally have my husband's resistance broken down and will be starting a coop build in a couple of months, probably 2 slightly modified Garden Arks since I have limited yard space (I'd ditch the pool in a second if it gave me more room for my raised bed garden and chickens), and I also want to keep them a little on the downlow with one of my neighbors. I am shooting for 6 or 7 hens - 2 Australorp, 2 Ameracauna, 1 Ideal 236 and 1 Gold sex link. That should give me a good combination of friendly egg producers for a household of 4.
I know everyone probably has tons of notes and scrap paper with scribbled coop designs and wish lists of breed combinations, but I have an interesting issue that came up with my kids. 2 boys, ages 12 and 10, both moderately color blind (red/orange/green). I asked my 10 yo what he thought about the look of a Gold Comet and he said the bird appeared green to him. It was standing on green grass in the photo so I'm thinking he can't tell the contrast. We first noticed this problem when he was 8 and playing golf - couldn't see an orange ball on the green grass. I hadn't planned on getting an entirely black and white chicken flock, but it would be an interesting look roaming around in the yard. I'll probably stick with my choices and the kids can look at their "green" chickens.
Well, I am glad to be here and look forward to coming out in the open with my chicken obsession. I'm sure everyone can understand how relaxing and fun this site is. For the long period of time I haven't been able to go forward with chickens, this site has been a wonderful daydreaming place for me.
