I don't actually every say "Howdy." Even though I live in the city in Texas where EVERYONE else does.
I had backyard chickens as a kid in an urban area, so now that we live in a smaller town, I couldn't wait to get my own flock. I started by hatching out 4 silkie chicks in a 1970s incubator that worked like a little champ. Two of my four chicks started crowing after several months, but luckily the silkie breeder who gave me the eggs supplied the little guys a nice home. Since then, I have acquired 5 additional full-size hens of different types, most acquired as pullets but 2 acquired as full grown hens, from other backyard farmers looking to reduce their flocks. While I love getting eggs, my husband and I refer to our gals as "living yard art," so providing homes for the older hens wasn't a big deal.
I've used this forum many times to reference different questions (and to assuage my fears while incubating eggs!), but a tragedy yesterday led me to post a (somewhat lengthy--sorry) thread in the "Emergency Diseases etc.) section. Yesterday was rough.
Anyway, looking forward to being a part of this. I've never done this before!
