Hello! I'm new to this forum/site, and to being a chicken mama . We live in the wild wide west open country of N WY. We have 5 acres, and started off with 3 white Plymouth rocks, became addicted, and then added two New Hampshire reds, and 4 Araucanas.. We had them outside, in a coop made from an old wooden dog house, and very sadly something killed 5-9 chickens... Four survived and we still have them... Devastated, I ordered 15 more chicks, barred rock... We are slowly getting our coop put together with the dog run and pictures will follow... Any advice or ANYTHING will be helpful!!! The kennel is 10'x6x6.... And we have four dog houses put all together... I'm gong to paint them all red to match... Please let me know if you think we need to add on!!!
So sorry for your loss. Just a couple of things I noticed.(1) I don't see any vents or windows. Some air flow is very important to have. Hardware cloth is the best to use to cover all holes. (2)Can't see from the pictures any locks on the doors. Predators must be lock out. (3) Do you close and lock the pop door(the small door the chickens use) every night? (4) Do you have an apron of wire around the bottom of the run and coop so predators can't dig under and get inside? We used patio stones buried side way all around coop and run.
This is what we did with the patio stones. Most people use wire attached to outside the run/coop laid out a couple of feet on the ground then covered with dirt to stop digging predators.
This is the locks we use on every door. Hope this helps.
