(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I was practically raised in the chicken yard. My fondest memories as a child were playing in the chicken yard from sun up til sun down barefoot with chicken poop between my toes. I used to come in and wash my poopy feet in my poor mothers kitchen sink because I did not like having dirty feet inside lol. Growing up my grandparents had around 300 chickens and sold fresh eggs so part of my daily routine was collecting and washing eggs and stocking them in the fridge. It was not long before I had my own personal flock that I tended to on my own. I had turkeys, geese, ducks, and chickens. We also raised cattle and I had a donkey and a horse. I literally spent 99% of my time playing with my animals. When I decided to raise chickens again back in February it really brought me back to them time when I was younger and I have developed a complete love for chickens all over again. I had forgotten how fun they were to watch and keep. I don’t think that I’ll ever be without chickens ever again! They are the best therapy!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently only have 13 but planning on getting about 10 or so more in early October
(3) What breeds do you have?
A Columbian Cochin Bantam Pair (Currently my only rooster and he tries to breed everyone but the bantam hens lol!)
1 Pekin Bantam (got stepped on by a cow and currently recovering)
1 Old English Game Bantam
3 Ameraucana
1 Buff Orpington
3 Barred Rock
2 Rhode Island Reds
Getting some more Ameraucana pullets in early October when the local feed store gets their order in! Love me some green eggs!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Actually I found the site while researching how to patch up my poor chicken with a broken leg, and then I realized I am not crazy, there are tons of other people that love chickens just as much, if not more than I do!!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My main hobby for the last several years has been online gaming, but I don’t really play as much as I used to. I know it sounds crazy, but I had been single for 6 years and never thought I would be in another relationship when I met the sweetest most amazing guy while playing a game one day and we have now been together for 2 years. Since he moved in, we have stopped playing so many games (we dated long distance for a time) and started doing more things together. We spent most of the summer in the pool and camping is now one of our hobbies as well as fishing and of course my chickens!! We are going to plant a garden this coming spring which I am excited for!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We live on about 5 acres out in the country of east Texas surrounded by pasture and moo moos. Or at least it used to be the country but seems like a lot of land around us is being sold and they are building gated communities there (I do not like it!!!). I have a 10 year old son who is on the autism spectrum so he keeps my pretty well on my toes. We have 3 dogs who are too smart for their own good!! All of them Ditch Dogs, aka I found them in the ditch lol. We have 2 cats, one I have had since I was a Jr. in High School who is deaf. She is the most awesome cat ever. We also have a bunny named Waffles
(we used to have one named Muffin but I put her in a cage outside one day to get some fresh air and my dogs decided to jump on top of her cage and cave it in and they killed her, Waffles is her brother and only survived because my boyfriend saved him before the dogs could get to him too, he now resides in the house full time and the dogs have unfortunately been zip-lined because they are turds and terrorize everything that moves and anyone running or riding a bike down the road ), 2 parakeets, a ball python named Lady and I also raise mice for the snake. Oh and one Betta fish named Stampy Fish.
I am hoping to maybe make some new friends here!! I suck at making new friends irl, mainly because I don't really go out to meet new people lol, but I tend to meet and make friends better online for some reason.
