Finally decided to try again with raising some chickens, the first 2 times were horrible. Raised about 20 cute little babies up until they were big enough to go outside. They were doing fine until a neighborhood dog got into the run and there was carnage everywhere

. The following year decided to try with larger hens and got 3 "Americauna" hens and a rooster. Everything went fine for about 3 months, then went outside to feed and they were all gone! Still have no idea what happened, no feathers or blood or anything, so no clue what happened to them. I have decided to try again and hopefully we have our coop and run safe and secure to work this time. If not, I do not think I will try again because it is too sad. We have a large totally enclosed run (with the wire buried about 6" deep) inside the back yard which has a chain link 6 foot fence around it and the coop is about 3 feet off the ground, just in case.

My middle son's girlfriend decided to give him 3 RIR's for Christmas so we have those girls doing quite well. I just bought what I thought were 4 Aracauna (sp?) pullets from my local farm store, but after reading a bit suppose they are actually Easter Eggers, and a very strange looking rooster who I suppose is also an Easter Egger. Anyway, this is the start of my flock and hopefully will learn a lot more on this site.

! Pleased you joined our community! Sorry your first flock didn't fare too well - sounds like the precautions you are taking with this group will be effective. Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone. I have been reading the threads and hopefully we have covered keeping them protected from predators. So far they seem to be okay. I am still a little nervous though.

I'm sorry to hear your first 2 attempts at chicken keeping ended so badly. Hopefully this time round things will go well for you!
