Well I'm new to this board and new to chickens. Had some chickens when I was 6, long long time ago, and bought a place with a coop so we decided to clean it up and see what happens. I have four chicks about 4 or 5 weeks old and five about 3 weeks old. All is well so far. There are some barred rocks, silkies and a few others I'm not sure of. Does't matter much what kind, my kids love them and they eat bugs. Hope to settle on a some large egg layers later and maybe a turkey and some ducks. I'll be learning a lot on here I'm sure but right now my only question is when can I let them out to free range? They have a large coop and a large inclosed run and they all go in the dog kennel as soon as the sun sets. Kennels in the coop, so they know were home is.

Hi chatterbox!

Are they all together? I would wait until they're 8 - 10 weeks. Then just let them out for a couple of hours, supervised. That way you can watch to see if they're ready to be on their own. That's what we did. We gave them a month or so in their new place, then started letting them out before dark. Every day we increased the time. Worked well.
Hope that helps.

thanks, They are all together and getting along great. The older ones are Bannies and aren't much bigger then the younger ones so that helps some.
