When I got home today my 16-18 week old dark Brahma hen was standing completely still on the poop deck in her coop. I held her and her crip is so full, but squishy not hard. I gave her ACV and olive oil and a little while later I saw her poop and it was blood. Not solid at all. What could be going on? Could she have gotten into something?

She may have coccidiosis, and her crop is just sluggish which can be common in illness. Go get some Corid powder or liquid from your feed store now. Don't wait, but you can call ahead to make sure they have some. Dosage is 1 1/2 tsp of the powder, or 2 tsp of the liquid per gallon of water for 7 days. Keep bedding clean and dry, and avoid them getting droppings in water by raising them to shoulder height.

They can get it again if they have not built up a resistance to the coccidia in the soil and normally in the poop. Or if they have problems with immunity. Other possibilities could be enteritis which be related to a past or chronic cocci infection. Capillary worms can sometimes cause blood in droppings. She could have possibly swallowed something sharp that has caused the bleeding. Cancer would be the worst possible scenario. I would check her crop first thing in the morning to see if it has gone down. It won't hurt to start Corid in the water even if it is something else. If you can talk your local vet into doing a fecal test on her droppings, you could rule out cocci or worms. They also can do a gram stain extra, which can look for enteritis. How is she acting? If her droppings are better next time, let us know, and pictures are always helpful to tell blood from intestinal shed.

I will separate her tonight and check her tomorrow. I have some CORID so I may just start it anyway. I didn't think it's worms bc we recently wormed them all. It was so sudden that I feel
Like she got into something. Definitely not intestinal lining, just blood.

Is there any way she could have gotten into some rat poison or a poisoned mouse? They contain coumadin, which can cause hemorrhage in the rodents. I will look again tomorrow on this thread for updates.

Okay, so I left to take one son to a game and I called home to have the other move her into a separate coop and start the CORID water. She already died! She must have gotten into something. She was completely healthy yesterday.

Oh, I am so sorry. It would be a good thing to refrigerate her body and take or send it on ice packs in to the state vet for a necropsy to look for what caused this. Contact your Dept. of Agriculture, state poultry vet in the AM.
