good morning everyone!! im wanting to make a little (big?) change to my little homestead. i have two 9 month old toms, and i love them dearly. they're inseparable. but my husband and i really love turkeys and want to get more! we raised these two guys from when they were 3 days old and im not sure if they would accept more turkeys into their duo. we have a few questions and options to consider here..

how many hens would we need to get to make our guys happy and not fight over them?
should we get rid of one tom and just get a few hens for our other guy?
would it traumatize our toms to be separated?

once that decision is made, how do we introduce full grown new hens to our farm and to our guy(s?)?

we only have an acre that is ours, but our turkeys also like to share our surrounding property with our amazing friendly turkey loving neighbor. im worried that the ladies might not like us and try to run away, and maybe take my toms roaming with them? there are alot of woods surrounding us, and i would be absolutely heartbroken if anything happened to my toms. should we not risk anything and just leave well enough alone with our two guys here and just give them a great life here with no ladies?

PLEASE HELP :fl:barnie

Are your toms broad breasted or are they heritage turkeys?

One thing certain is that a tom turkey will accept hen turkeys. It is best for the health of the hens to get rid of one of the toms and get at least a minimum of 4 to 5 hens for one tom but ten hens is even better.

Separating the toms into separate pens is about the only way to keep them from fighting over the hens. If they are separated by a see through fence, it will actually increase the fighting. See through fences seem to make the toms braver and more willing to fight through the fence.

The proper method of introduction is to keep the newcomers quarantined in their own pen that is located where the tom can see them but cannot get up close to the fence to eliminate any actual contact. Once the quarantine period is over let the tom get acquainted with the fence separating them and then finally just let them all get together.

Once the hens realize where the food and water come from (should happen while they are in quarantine), they should stick around just fine.

If your toms are broad breasted, it may work best to just keep things as they are.
