I have had Hughes Net for my IP for 7 years as it was the only "high speed" IP available here in the boonies of Florida. I have been so frustrated with the service, the speed isn';t much faster than dial up. The band width limit is so small, we go over constantly, and never do any streaming video. Call customer service and get someone from Indi... blah blah... fast forward..

My techie friend gave me his Virgin Mobile wi-fi modem to try out here and it WORKS! High speed, unlimited bandwidth and all this for 30 dollars less a month.. holy surfin happiness. Just wanted to let people know their are more choices now....

even better, it's a no contract... woopie

I had wildblue what a crappy connection for $90 a month.

I am now paying $55 for way faster speeds and no contract. Just changed last week to a local provider. Its the way to go for sure.

ETA: I have to pay 9 months of early cancellation fee to at $15 a month but still will save on the last 5 1/2 months and thereafter so worth it.

I am PRESENTLY on WildBlue...but my 2-year Contract EXPIRED last month. So, it is NOW "Month-to-Month, I believe.

When I got WildBlue, High-Speed Internet was NOT available in my area---only Dial-up speed.
(WildBlue is about halfway in-between for me, it seems.)

I pay 63.00 per month and I'm looking for something else...FASTER AND CHEAPER !!!

But the ONLY other Service available in my area is QWest telephone High-Speed Internet. Their Service is LOUSY...It makes WildBlue look like the BEST in the WORLD...which they AIN'T !!

I'm interested in learning about some "other options".

Keep on talkin' !!!

THANKS for the "tip" !!!

Hey Junkmanme, try this link, it has a place to enter your area info to see what type of coverage you have in your area. If this one doesn't work for you, look into who has the best cell coverage in your area and maybe go with a wifi from them. I just really liked the no contract and the unlimited bandwidth. The unit is available at Walmart, and the set up was simple enuff for me to do in a couple of clicks.

Good luck

We had Hughes Net too and HATED it!!! It was SO slow!!! Youtube wasn't even an option... It would take an hour to load a three minute video. We had their unlimited high speed internet plan, but they would monitor our usage, and when we used it too much (like more than an hour a day), they'd make it REALLY slow. A simple page would take a minute to come up, if it ever did... And customer service was HORRIBLE!

Since then we were able to get Century Link (Hughes Net was the only available high speed internet provider for a while). Century Link is GREAT! VERY happy with them! We're able to watch youtube like there's no tomorrow, and the internet's always fast, even when we have six computers on the internet at once (using wi-fi).

ChicknJ,

I looked at the website that you provided.

It shows "spotty" coverage in my area for 3G Coverage (data)...but appears to "barely" cover the area where my house is.

It does NOT however show coverage for cell-phone. I would suppose that would be covered within 3G Coverage...would it not?

I presently use "TracFone" cell-phone which works very well and I am pleased with it. (I don't use a Land-Line.) But I only use the telephone 2 or rarely 3 times a day ....if at all. (I hate talking on the phone....can't hear.)

Can you provide me with any further "tips" regarding this Virgin Mobile access?

At present, I only use my desktop computer...and MIGHT (doubtful) get a Laptop to use in my yard sometime. I have a Wi-Fi Modem....but I haven't hooked it up yet....I think I need to add a Wi-Fi board to my Desktop computer.

ANY additional information or suggestions are very much appreciated. I'm a "quick-study" usually...but quite ignorant of these "modern things".

THANKS,

sunflowerenvy,

THANKS !!!
I saved the "Link" and will check it tomorrow! (It's past my bed-time.)
I expect I will be changing ISP probably March 1...but it may turn out to be April. I just want to make sure that I don't get myself into a mess that I can't easily get out of. OR that gives me no "functional alternatives" IF I do want to get OUT. I've had THAT PROBLEM with WildBlue for 2 years. Hooray for Competition !!!

THANKS again !!!

P.S. Reading THIS thread...Hughes is even worse than WildBlue....which is "tolerable" and better than Dial-up...usually.
